How to Use GTAW ChatTool

GTAW ChatTool turns a GTA World UCP or Assistant log into clean, editable chat that you can place directly onto a GTA screenshot.

1 · Paste your log

Open Chat Formatter and paste your GTAW UCP or Assistant log into the Import box.

If you're using a GTAW Assistant log, enter your character name so the tool can format your side of phone conversations correctly.

Press Load log.

2 · Pick who and what you want

Use Characters to choose who you want included. If there are lots of names, use the search box.

Only selects just that character. You can also use All, None, Select visible and Deselect visible.

You can filter in-person RP, phone calls, messages, OOC, system lines and use the time range to narrow down a scene.

3 · Clean up the Filtered Log

Your result appears in Filtered Log. This is editable, so delete unwanted lines, fix typos, shorten lines or condense the scene. The preview updates as you edit.

Changing a filter rebuilds the filtered text from your original log, so do your final manual edits after filtering.

4 · Add it to Screenshot Composer

Press Add to Screenshot Composer. Your edited chat is added to the Composer as a movable chat segment.

5 · Add your GTA screenshot

In Screenshot Composer, press Upload GTA screenshot and choose your image. Click and drag the chat block to position it.

6 · Choose your screenshot size

1920 × 1080Standard 1080p / normal screenshot
2560 × 14401440p screenshot
3840 × 21604K screenshot
1080 × 1080Square / social post
1080 × 1350Portrait / social post

Fill / crop fills the whole canvas but may crop the edges.

Fit entire image keeps the whole screenshot visible but may leave unused space if its shape doesn't match the selected output size.

7 · Add more than one chat segment

To add another part of the conversation to the same screenshot, go back to Chat Formatter, filter/edit the next part and press Add to Screenshot Composer again.

It appears as another independent segment. Each segment can be moved separately.

8 · Adjust your chat

Each segment can have its own name, font size, chat width, background opacity, timestamps, visibility and position. You can also duplicate or delete segments.

9 · Export

When everything is positioned how you want it, press Export finished PNG.

The exported image uses the canvas size you selected, regardless of the size of the preview in your browser.

Autosave & New Project

Your current workspace is retained locally in your browser, so you can switch between Formatter and Composer without losing progress.

New Project clears the current workspace and starts fresh. History has been temporarily removed while its saving system is reworked.

Found a bug?

GTAW ChatTool is still in active development. If something is formatted incorrectly or doesn't work, contact Welsh on the GTA World Forums.

If possible, include a screenshot and a few lines from the original log that caused the problem.

Inline emotes

If an exported log has flattened an inline emote into normal speech, wrap the emote in *asterisks* in Edit Chat. For example: Amber Wellington says: It may rain. *Amber looks up to the sky.* I should get home. The marked section is rendered in GTAW emote purple while the surrounding speech keeps its normal colour.

Blur & redaction

In Edit Chat, wrap text in //double slashes// to blur it in Preview, transparent PNG exports and Screenshot Composer. Use %percent signs% when you want a solid black redaction instead.
